Name of artist: Bruce Lovelace
Date of artist life: January 3rd, 1994 Personal background: His love of photography began when he was only 9 years old. He got an old plastic Kodak camera. That he used in a school field trip. 1970 when he did his first photo shoot. The majority of his location photography is done in South Jersey. He’s catholic and his culture is pretty “normal”. He doesn’t talk about that as much as he talks about his actual job. He likes hiking, running in the woods, playing tennis, shooting landscape photographing, and running digital photography workshops. Some man life events were when him and his dad learned a lot together and also shared many frustrations in learning the intricacies of printing in color. That made him really decide to become a part of the photography business. Specifically baby portraits. Until he decided to leave them for family photography and his own interests. |
Style: This artist possesses characteristics of compelling compostion and some atention to detail and unique moments. The 5 pictures I chose from his work werre based off of these. They also jus remind me of landscape photos. In these pictures he uses the glass ball and takes the unique nature photos. If you pay attention the ball is flipped right side up and the background may be upside down. Glass balls usually flip it upside down. The compelling compostion comes in when he took the photo of himself. It showed a little of his personality and quirkyness even if I never met him. He obviously has a reason to take these photos, and has a story. Maybe it’s up to the audience to figure it out. Leave our imagination to do the work. He has simple but beautiful photos.
Philosophy: the major ideas behind his photos were personal. He took these for the looks and his own experiement. Personally he did an amazing job. He has many sides to his photography side. He takes amazing portraits but also works with nature and that is the best. We need to appreciate the world. Maybe he does put a little political aspect into his photos descreatly. He is shoeing us in a photo how important the earth is and the enviornment around us. He makes us feel a ceratin emotion looking at these such as sucked in by the looks but mentally sucked in by thinking about how we live here and how beautiful it really is.
Influences: Bruce has inspired me to become more “out there”. He made me branch out into a specific photography style don’t normally do. I had already had a glass ball but never would really use it and or know how to. I used it a couple times but this was for a better purpose and felt good like I was learning something. It showed me I could take pictures like other artists and not doubt myself. It was difficult to get the perfect sunset and color scheme. I stayed with this even when I wasn’t comfortable.

Compare and Contrast: Photo one: I chose his photo of the glass ball on the log in the woods because it is very interseting and cool how he put he got the glass ball to balance on the log like that. It gives us a point of perspective. As does all of his photos. They all have a story and background to why it is being taken and has artsy characteristics. This was also very difficult for me because I was not sure it was even possible to have the ball balance on this un even log. I proved myself wrong I got it!
Photo two: I chose this one because it has a sunset to it and I love sunsets/ Sunrises. I think they have a story without even thinking of one before. They look magical and bright. They calm the soul. Mine compared to his is a bit different yes. I couldn’t get the exact color for the sunset. I had a different background. I tried to get for more of a city landscape but I tried to use a street in it and all. His has a curve in the reflection of the ball I do not. I like his and how it looks.
Photo three: I adore the water and the pretty sunset or sunrise. I love water photography, the trees reflecting off the water, how long the landscape looks. You honeslty don’t even need to be good or know a lot on photohraphy just pull out you phone and snap a pic of the trees over the water. His is particulary cool becuase he used the glass ball and yet still has all the important subjects in it. The exposure and contrast is well balanced and composed. It is dark but warm feeling with a hint of orange.
Photo four: This photo I chose because Pool is fun, it is a challenging and detailed game. You think a lot in the game. Wich was my purpose of taking it. I want people to think when they see this and in general. I love the old vibes i get from his photo. Mine was pretty similar compared to the others. I tried to do almost the exact same thing but some were a little off. This was my favorite to take it was fun and a fun shot!
Photo five: This was a fun one, it was a self portrait. It shows his personality and the personality I portray him as. I find him quirky and weird. This shows in the photo. I found it cool how he made a self portrait within the glass ball. I like how in the background hes upside down but in the glass ball he is upright. I tried to wear red and be in a dark room or have a dark backdrop but light everhwhere else. It was difficult to get the ball to stand especially when I don’t know where I placed the stand for it. I chose his photos for the reason of having fun and experimenting.
Personal Artist Statement: Again my photos are all about having fun but also recreating his photos. My photos tell a story of my own. They show others to be push themselves to try new things and even if you can’t do the same as someone esle just try your hardest and make your own. The areas you notice first are obviosly the glass ball but also the main focus within the glass ball. I used contrast and exposure within my photos. I evened out the color, and made them have feeling. Such as warm or cold or nuetral. Pattern was used with the balls in pool, and the color scheme in the sunset ones. All these photos made up a story and had well balanced elements in photography.
